Substitute Teaching Survival Guide

Substitute teaching is a great opportunity to get hands on experience working with students, and it can be a way to help get your foot in the door with a school district or charter school. However, going to a new school and working in a new classroom can be a bit intimidating. As a recruiter for National Heritage Academies, I oversee substitute teacher hiring for 61 schools, and have been able to hear from not only seasoned substitutes but also school administrators regarding best practices for subbing. With that in mind, here are some helpful tips so that you not only "survive" your first day, but that the experience is successful and enjoyable!

Before starting, make or get a map of the school and note the teacher's names and grades on each classroom. That way, whenever you are called in you will know exactly where you are going. It is also a good idea to get to the school early, especially if it is your first time. This will allow you to meet the secretary, principal, next door teacher and find some people to help answer questions as needed. Be sure to ask them about emergency procedures, if any assemblies are scheduled and what the policy is on bathroom/hall passes. It is also a great time to find the teacher's lounge, extra supplies, copy machine or anything else you may need.

Once you are in the classroom, learn the names of each student. Students love to be called by name, and feel special when a substitute remembers who they are. If students do not already have name tags on their desk, have them write their name in large letters and keep it at their desk all day.

Always come prepared with alternative things to do. Some teachers go out on an unplanned absence and may not have left a lesson plan for you. If one is provided, try and get through everything on it. This may not be possible, but teachers really appreciate when substitutes follow their instructions. Leave a note letting the teacher know how far you got and elements of the lesson that either worked well or should be revisited. Also be sure to focus on maintaining student engagement. If you find it difficult to engage certain students, assigning small tasks such as passing out papers can make them feel special and more likely to participate.

Lastly, leave the room as clean (or cleaner) than you found it. Teachers love coming back to a good looking classroom. This task can be made easy by having students help tidy up throughout the day, so that you are not left with a big mess after dismissal.

As always, if you have questions or need help with anything, don't be afraid to ask! Many staff members were also substitutes at some point, and know where you are coming from. Some schools and districts are better than others at providing you with support, so try to position yourself in schools that provide the resources you need to be successful.

Why Would I Need A Virtual Assistant?

As a virtual assistant, whenever I network, people always ask, what is a virtual assistant and why do I need one? I am sometimes amazed to encounter people who still have no idea about this profession. I am amazed because many of the people that enquire are small business owners like myself.

Without being too technical, a virtual assistant (VA) works with entrepreneurs and business owners from their remote office, completing those tasks that have been preventing the business from reaching its optimum. Having a virtual assistant means having more money in the bank, as one of my clients explains it.

If you find yourself stuck with administrative tasks, web maintenance, customer follow ups, you know the list of things that keep you chained to your desk, and you can't get out to meet with or start looking for prospects, then you need a virtual assistant.

Now that we've determined that you need to go out and find yourself a VA here are five things to consider before you begin your search.

Write down all your reasons for wanting a VA. For instance, do you need more time or maybe you need to offload some tasks so you can focus on more important tasks. Whatever your reasons are, be sure to write them down and make sure that they are realistic. This will keep you focused and serve as a reminder of the things that you should be doing when you hire a virtual assistant.

Outline your tasks This will be beneficial to you and to the VA when he/she comes on board. This list will serve as a mini advertisement when you post to forums. A thorough list goes a long way in helping you to find the right match and serve as a deterrent for unqualified candidates.

Here is an example of just a few things that you can outsource to your VA, transcription, callbacks, email management, mail forwarding, contact management, event planning and presentations.

Determine the qualifications Are you an internet marketer, or a real estate agent? You'd be surprised to know that there are virtual assistants serving in a number of niches. This will greatly reduce the learning curve so that you will have someone to come on board and fit right in.

Create guidelines whenever possible Do you have a specific way of doing things? Then spend some time creating a guideline that your VA can follow. Often a virtual assistant can come in and provide suggestions for automating processes and thus improve efficiency. If you feel there are certain things that must be followed, please create a guideline and ensure that your VA understands it.

Back to the first point Please keep your reason for hiring a VA at the forefront of your mind so that you do not use your newfound free time to do things that are counterproductive to your goals.

Virtual Assistants (VAs) are there to help small businesses who can't afford full-time secretarial support or need to delegate occasional typing or admin work. You will need a spare room (or at least a clear desk, away from the kids, TV or any distraction), a phone, modem and PC with all the usual software applications plus the ability to correct unintelligible emails while talking to suppliers you've never heard of about products you don't understand! If you can do all that, you can typically charge between £10-20 per hour for routine secretarial work done by phone or email.

As a childminder you can look after other people's children whilst tending your own, although you're only allowed up to six in total: that's up to three under fives and up to three more between five and eight years old. You will need to go through some training first and you, your family and your home will need to be approved by your local council before you can even be put on their list.

"There's no fixed fee per hour, per child," says Kay Lyons from the National Childminding Association, "and it varies all over the country, but the average pay per child is about £2.30 per hour for full-time care and about £2.44 for part time."

Be a Doula

Doulas are birth-partners and post-birth partners- like surrogate mothers to new mothers- and any woman who has had a baby can become one. You will need to take a doula course with British Doulas who run day courses for women who want to become birth partners and post-birth partners. You don't need academic qualifications to go on the course but do need to be willing to do what it takes to help new mums. Work can be both full and part time, doing essential everyday tasks such as making sure the mothers fridge is full and preparing meals and snacks for the new mum. You can also work as a birth doula where you will be with a mother when she goes into labor and throughout the birth. Doulas in Britain make, on average, about £10 per hour for post-birth work and between £250-500 for a birth.

Market Research

There are a few companies in Britain that have a pool of people they regularly call upon to join a focus group. Sometimes they specifically need mothers or fathers to test out child or baby-related products. You can make between £30 to £100 for a session depending on what you are talking about, plus more if you manage to recruit extra members. Saros Research is one company that conducts focus groups like these, and more information can be found on their website.

Fostering

There is a huge need for foster parents in this country and if you have enough love, patience and experience in caring for children this can be a very worthwhile way of making some extra money. The exact amount you are paid depends on the local authority, and although between £100-176 is the Government's recommended minimum some councils pay less. The Fostering Network recommends a minimum of £115-200 per child (depending on their age) outside London per week. Of course, it's hugely important that you do this "job" for the love of children rather than just the need for cash. Foster-net, the British Association for Adoption and Fostering and The Fostering Network are all good ports of call for further advice.

Become a Lactation Consultant

If you have breastfed your baby you may be interested in helping other women to do the same. Train first to be a breastfeeding consultant - a voluntary role - with the La Leche League or the Association of Breastfeeding Mothers. Then, after gaining many hours of experience you could move on to train as a lactation consultant and charge for work in hospitals or private practice. Sue Saunders, a lactation consultant in Kent, says that depending on where you live and what your experience is you could charge between £15-50 an hour for consultancy.

How To Run A Successful Small Business

Let's face it; it's not easy being a small business owner or a solo professional. In addition to creating effective marketing plans and marketing strategies that will get paying customers through the door, we need to be on top of all the other important aspects of running a business.

With only 24 hours in a day, one brain, and two hands with which to take care of everything, we've got to find ways to work smarter-not harder-if we want to build successful businesses without sacrificing our sanity in the process.

There are a number of ways to leverage your time so you can maximize your profits. Below are my top 10:

1. Get in motion by eliminating the procrastinator's best friend: "Messy Desk/Office Syndrome." If that is something you're plagued with, you'll find slaying the beast a lot easier if you take what I call the "The 3 D System" approach to organization which directs that you look at what is on your desk or what is cluttering your office and either Dump it, Deal with it or Delegate it.

2. Outsource everything that is not the best use of your time. Look at where you make your money, and if it's not at bookkeeping, Web site maintenance, or writing marketing materials, for example, farm those tasks out to someone who can do them far more quickly and efficiently than you can.

3. Take things from your "to-do" list and block off actual times for working on specific items. For example, 10-10:30 AM might be for returning phone calls; 1-2:00 PM for working on an article; 2-3:00 PM could be for updating your marketing plan or for researching business networking events. You'll be amazed at how much more you get done when you assign specific times for doing things.

4. Resist the temptation to answer the phone every time it rings as a new conversation will not only distract you from what you are doing, but it may lead you to abandon the task all together as you become drawn into resolving other matters. If you work alone, pretend you have a secretary and that you've told him or her to "hold all calls." Then return the calls when you have both a clear mind and the time to tackle them.

5. Take charge of your e-mails; don't let them take charge of you. Resist temptation and commit to checking your in-box only twice a day: first thing in the morning and around 3:00 PM.

6. Set specific, realistic goals with timelines and commit to taking at least two action steps every day.

7. Avoid becoming overwhelmed by chunking every task down into manageable bite-sized pieces. Not only will you get more done, you will feel terrific as you realize how much you have accomplished.

8. Tackle the things you hate doing first. Like a trip to the dentist, you'll feel an awful lot better when that phone call you've been dreading and avoiding is finished.

9. Build accountability into everything that is difficult or important to you. It doesn't matter if it is crafting your marketing message, writing press releases, or putting together your media kit, you will find you will get a lot more accomplished if you are accountable to someone for having completed your actions. If you are not currently working with a business coach, find a neutral party to help you stay on track.

10. Stop spinning your wheels and start making more money by having a clearly defined niche to which all your marketing efforts are directed. Make sure your target market is one that a) has a need for your services, b) is underserved, and c) can afford your fees. Be as specific as possible when determining your niche and create marketing materials that address its needs and that position you as the solution your target market has been looking for.

Bottom Line: Efficiency is the key to productivity and productivity is the key to increased revenues.

What Role Does Leadership Play in Employee Satisfaction?

It seems daily there are job satisfaction statistics plastered all over the internet, 70% of employees dislike their job and are looking for another employer. The majority of employees are disgruntled with their current job! Why are there so many people unhappy with their job?

I have worked with two organizations that held their leadership team accountable for the development and retention of their teams and both of their results were worthy of emulation. I have also worked for a company that was totally consumed with how much money they could profit and the leadership was non existent. The retention rate for that company was miserable and the ones that did stay were only there because they couldn't find another job or were too complacent or lazy to look for one.

So what's the expectation of the Leadership team? Leaders should first off understand the strength's and weakness of every team member as this will allow them to work on areas concerning the associate's development. I guarantee you that when you show a genuine interest in your people they will respond, some better than others but they will respond.

Let's use a true example, Patrick worked for his previous employer for 3 years and during this time he was never rewarded for his outstanding efforts and dedication. The harder he worked the greater demand the leaders placed on him. He finally realized that the owners were making an incredible amount of profit from his efforts and he was receiving nothing. He applied for a new job and was inspired by the fact that they provided continuous training for development and great career opportunities. It didn't take long before his efforts were recognized and he was promoted. He has now been with his current company for over 7 years and loves it.

Let's use another true example, Amalia has been working for her employer for over two years and is a key player in every aspect of her job. She received minimal training but exceptional expectations; she learned the job through determination and self pride. The leadership is non existent concerning her well being and development and she is in that 70% of people that like the work but are totally disgruntled with the leadership. Leadership is a 24 hour commitment, when you fail to recognize exceptional talent and assist in their development then you have only yourself to blame if you have a problem retaining employees.

Let's use another example; a leader that is disorganized typically will have employees that are unhappy. The boss that waits' until the last minute to finish commitments and then expects their team to make up for their lack of organization. Employees that have worked diligently all week have no desire on late Friday afternoon to have a load of work dumped on them because of their boss lack of organizational skills.

Then there is the leader that never recognizes they have associates that are ill to a point that they should be at home vice being at work. Then to top this off the leader becomes slightly ill and has to take the day off.

Do we really have to wonder why so many people are unhappy? True leaders will lead and bosses will boss, there is a major difference. Treat your team with respect, dignity, appreciation and assist them in developing their career. The results will be amazing, I know for a fact as I have been subjected to both and have personally observed the motivation or lack of and the results.

A well trained respected associate is a professional and productive associate of which your organization will benefit from. Please don't take my word for it, try it out yourself and see.

Anniversary of Sam Spade Radio Broadcast

Today's date in history was the first time that Sam Spade was broadcast on the radio. On July 12, 1946, CBS radio set in motion the series as a Friday night special. When the audience heard it they enjoyed it so much and the response was so great that the network decided to make it a recurring part of their fall lineup starting September 29 of that year.

From that day onward until 1949, Sam Spade had found his home on the Sunday night radio service. The original sponsors for the show were the makers of Wildroot Cream Oil. Howard Duff was selected to star in the original title role. After his departure from the show Stephen Dunne replaced him as Spade. This final star remained with the show until 1950.

Sam Spade replaced the ever popular Maltese Falcon as a major radio crime show. Sam was a distinctive San Francisco detective created by none other then William Spier. For those into Old Time Radio, you will recognize the name from the thriller radio series entitled "Suspense". Spier acted as the editor, director and producer of the show. He was a lifelong radio veteran who had entered the profession during radio's early years in 1929. Upon accepting the position for the Sam Spade series, Spier enlisted the talents of Ann Lorraine and Bob Tallman for weaving the various tales of intrigue.

When selecting the actors to feature in the radio show, Spier was very much impressed with the tough voice qualities displayed by young Howard Duff. During Duff's senior years in Roosevelt high school he had decided that the sound of the audience's applause was overwhelming and he became determined to switch from art to an acting career. He worked with several of the local theatres until he finally made his mark in the radio world. When America entered the war, Duff was employed in the Armed Forces Radio services. His position as a war correspondent was held by him for 4 long years. The character of Sam Spade quickly launched him into the national spotlight.

When Spier created the character of Sam Spade he did so in such a manner as to provide him with several easily identifiable traits. Followers of the show will readily notice that Spades favorite means of transportation was the common streetcar. In those days he could go just about anywhere for a single dime. He was known for his disliked of taxi cabs and his favorite drink was cheap alcohol. Each week you would be greeted by Sam opening his desk draw and clanging glasses together as he began his dictation of the story line. He wasn't a man with expensive taste in drinks for those clamoring glasses more then likely held a bit of Old Granddad or some other bargain basement booze. He would dictate each case carefully to his secretary Effie Perrine who recorded each word with total clarity. The episodes read like a report all signed and dated awaiting delivery.

Howard Duff left the show in 1950 making the last episode of Sam Spade broadcast on September 17, 1950. Although the show continued for another couple of months with Steve Dunne as the new Sam Spade it failed to achieve the greatness that it once held.

Drop Leaf Dining Tables at Mom's House

When my mother got married, she outfitted her home with a complete coordinated set of furniture-a matched master bedroom set, a cocktail table and end tables, a desk for my dad. But the pride and joy of her home was her dining room table. It was Colonial style, pine with a maple finish, and round, 70 inches across. It came with a leaf that would make it oval, and it was easy to seat twelve guests for Thanksgiving dinner.

We never lived in a large house, so how did this grand piece of furniture find a place within our modest home? Mom had some foresight, and when it was time to pick furniture, she chose a drop table that gave her exactly the seating she was looking for but with built-in features that made it ideal for a home that might have limited space.

What are drop leaf tables? They are tables with a fixed center section on the tabletop, and hinged sections on either side that can be dropped down when the table is not in use. When you raised the hinged sides of the tabletop, they are supported movable gate legs, arms, or brackets.

On most days, Mom's dining room table was pushed up against the wall; it projected less than two feet into the room. If we needed a little more space-for homework or a craft project-we would lift one side and slide the movable table legs to support the tabletop. Clear off the table when we were done, drop the side, and the dining room would have a clear passageway again.

It's not surprising that an Early American furniture suite would include drop leaf tables. The design dates back to sixteenth century England. The design remains in use today for dining tables, sofa tables, and end tables. A special design for drop leaf tables-a tripod table-is has three legs, and the round table top has three hinged sides. Drop the three hinged sides, and the round table top converts to a triangle, and it can squeeze into a tight corner. With a similar design, a secretary desk with an drop leaf top provides a full-size desktop when necessary, and then can be folded down to accommodate a tight passageway.

The drop-leaf design has not been lost on today's furniture designers. For people who live in apartment and condos and who like to entertain, the drop leaf table provides an excellent solution for a dining room table in a limited amount of space. You can find a variety of drop leaf tables-bar-height or standard size--that you can place at the end of a galley, and turn a small space into an eat-in kitchen. Some drop leaf tables even have storage space for folding chairs built into the base.

Most people who sew or do crafts don't have a space dedicated to those activities. Instead, they end up setting up on the kitchen or dining room table and putting away their work at the end of the day. Today's furniture designers have integrated the function of drop leaf tables into specialized pieces of furniture. You can buy a portable sewing and craft cart that incorporates a drop leaf tabletop and integrates storage underneath. If you can't find drop leaf tables that perfectly suit your space, your style, or your needs, search the Internet for plans for a custom-built table.

It's hard to keep a good idea down. Drop leaf tables have been around for centuries, and we keep coming up with new ideas for turning the design into something useful for our modern lives.
