Virtual Assistants are absolutely the coming home business of choice. There are many reasons for this:

1. So many women (and men too) have valuable experience with office programs of many different types.
2. Office programs are really quite affordable for the small business person with a home office.
3. Equipment needed is also affordable. Generally, a computer with high-speed internet access, a reliable and quick printer, a scanner, a telephone with free long-distance, and some online transcription programs will be the extent of the investment in office needs. That's of course in addition to a comfortable desk, chair, and good lighting.

Along with all those good reasons listed above, many people are out of work during this economic downturn but with our global economy and its insatiable need for information and swift customer service, the work normally done by these people has NOT gone away. In fact, the work load may increase as we pursue business more anxiously.

However, many businesses are feeling the crunch of the economy and cannot afford to staff their office as they once did. The cost of internet access, telephone service, rent, salaries, and benefits is just too much of a burden.

Enter the home clerical worker - the virtual assistant, or the virtual customer service agent or the remote data entry clerk.

There are many specialty types of work that can just as easily, and perhaps even more efficiently, be done from a home office. What types of fields might fit this well? Below is a short list of ideas and I'm sure there are many more types of work that would readily lend themselves to a "virtual" environment.

The list could go on and on.

One of the biggest drawbacks for the implementation of the virtual or remote work environment is still the fear employers have that their client lists, documents, sales secrets, or general business information could be compromised by a remote home office worker.

I believe we already have or are very close to obtaining software which would protect business owners from this. Access to restricted websites only by strictly monitored passwords, restricted login times, virus program requirements and reports from the home office worker, and other protocols can be utilized. In many cases, the somewhat old-fashioned confidentiality agreement would be very effective as well.

Many businesses have been utilizing home-based customer service people for several years. That has had some drawbacks, as we all have experienced, but better selection and monitoring of worker performance will make big improvements in this area. Additionally, the economic climate has made the pool of quality employees much greater.

Make no mistake, quality employees will be seeking the opportunity to work from home more and more. These quality employees have already proven themselves to be trustworthy, reliable, good workers, and efficient. They also know they can be more efficient when removed from the distractions of day to day office interruptions. They know it will cost them less to do the job, i. e., auto costs, baby sitter costs, clothing costs, meal costs.

In this economic climate, there is no need to outsource customer service work to foreign countries. Customer service can be performed very well and at very reasonable cost by persons in their own homes. Customer service work done by persons familiar with the language and business customs of their own country offer an outstanding service to a company's clients. Speaking strictly as a consumer, I know I certainly appreciate speaking with a customer service representative who completely understands my language and that I can understand in return. Nothing is so annoying as the need to hang up and call a company back, hoping to resolve my issues with someone who understands me and can be understood by me.

I raise this question to small business owners in the crunch of our economic problems. Why not get the help you need at a more reasonable price? Stop working those late hours all by yourself - a virtual assistant can help your company be more profitable.
